Elizabeth Gibson Obituary

Elizabeth (Lizzie Mae) Gibson was born on September 16, 1931, in Talbotton, Georgia to the late Reverend Nemous and Florence H. Copeland. Elizabeth was their only beloved child.

Elizabeth accepted Christ at Bethel CME Church in Shiloh, Georgia at a young age. She attended Copeland Quarters School before moving to New York City in her mid-20’s. While living in New York City, Elizabeth met and married the late Mr. Arnold Gibson.

After returning from New York City, Elizabeth worked in various roles before beginning a long and dedicated career as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Oakview Nursing Home in Waverly Hall, GA and the Roosevelt Institute in Warm Springs, GA.  Later, she worked as a bus driver for the Harris County Senior Center.

Deeply civic and community minded, Elizabeth volunteered with voter registration drives and was a strong advocate for public housing in Harris County. She successfully advocated to have local roads paved so that school buses could access the rural route easier. She also enjoyed collecting fruit baskets for senior community members at Christmas.

Elizabeth had a heart for service and a deep passion for sharing her faith. Matthew 28: 19-20 was her life’s mission. Elizabeth served faithfully at Bethel CME church as the choir director and was involved in youth ministry. She joined Greentown Heights Church of Christ in the early 1980’s where she remained as a faithful member until her death.

Elizabeth leaves to cherish her loving memory, seven children: Debra Johnson, Monique (Eric) Wherry, Tina (Hayward) Dunlap, Derrick Gibson, Arnold Gibson Jr, Natalie Chaney and Ricky Gibson, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
