Mary (Harris) Compton Obituary

Mary Ann Harris Compton, born on July 26, 1950, the youngest daughter of five children born to the late Cicero and Lucille Harris. She peacefully departed this life on May 10, 2026, surrounded by her children along with the love and memories of her family and those whose lives she touched so deeply.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved parents; a sister, Aileen Harris; and her brothers, C.H. “Buck” Harris and Robert Harris. Though their absence was deeply felt, Mary carried the love and lessons of her family with grace throughout her life.

She leaves behind a loving and devoted family who will forever cherish her memory: A sister, Eliza (Walter) Gates, Woodbury, Ga.; Her children, Jerry Compton, Jr., Woodbury, Ga. and Kimberly (Ronald) Carter; Atlanta, Ga.; and her treasured granddaughter, Kennedy Carter, Atlanta, Ga., who brought immense joy to her life. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, former students, and colleagues whose lives were enriched by her kindness and wisdom.

Mary was a proud graduate of Albany State University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in education. She devoted 37 remarkable years to shaping young minds as an educator with the Atlanta Public School System. Early childhood education was not simply her profession—it was her calling. She was a part of the teaching team that advocated, piloted and brought the first kindergarten program to the state of Georgia. Mary had a unique gift for nurturing children with patience, creativity, and innovative teaching methods that inspired confidence and curiosity in every student she encountered. Her classroom was a place of warmth, encouragement, and learning.

At a young age, Mary dedicated her life to Christ at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful and devoted member throughout her life. She especially loved singing in the choir, lifting her voice in praise until the COVID era caused her to become more hesitant about attending large gatherings, including church services. Even then, her faith never wavered, and she continued to trust God faithfully.

Mary was also a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Starswhere she served for many years and was a past Worthy Matron. She was known by all who loved her as positive, encouraging, soft-spoken, and deeply compassionate. Though gentle in spirit, she possessed the heart of a true leader—guiding others with wisdom, humility, and unwavering strength.

Mary Ann Harris Compton’s legacy will live through the countless children she taught, the family she loved so dearly, and the many lives she touched with her kindness, faith, and quiet strength. She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever treasured.
