Ruth Horton Obituary

Ruth Horton was a caring mother, wife, sister, aunt, grandmother, cousin, and friend. She left this world suddenly on June 9, 2022, at age 65. Our hearts are broken, but we are comforted by the fact that she lived her life to the fullest without regret or apology. And that she now rests in the arms of the Father.

She was born, along with her womb buddy, Ruby, to Sarah Frances Gray and Roosevelt Waller on January 28, 1957. After graduating high school, she explored several occupations until she found her niche, which was cooking. She worked for, and retired from, the Meriwether County school system, where she served as a food service worker at Manchester Middle School for almost 30 years. While employed by the school system, she touched and impacted the lives of many students, faculty, and staff. She was affectionately known as “Miss Ruth the lunchroom lady.”

She married her high school sweetheart, Silvester Horton, and together they had one child, Jadrienne J’nae, who was her pride and joy. Jadrienne and her mom were especially close and shared a special mother-daughter bond.

Ruth was known by almost everyone as either “Dag” or “Dagwood,” the nickname given to her by a childhood neighbor and family friend. She was a social butterfly and usually the life of the party. Quite often, she could be found “twisting the night away” on the dance floor. She was especially fond of family gatherings and spending time with her family at every opportunity. She had many meaningful friendships, and she was especially close to her longtime friend, Mary Jo Lawson.

She had a gift for singing, and she used that gift to sing in the choir at her home church, New Hope Baptist, in Manchester, GA. She also had a gift for, and loved to write, poems.

Ruth was preceded in death by her mother and father, Sarah Frances Gray and Roosevelt Waller, her very special loving and devoted aunt and uncle, Dock and Ida Mae “Tut” Chaney; as well as several other aunts and uncles.

She is survived by: beautiful daughter, Jadrienne Horton; a husband, Silvester Horton; two sisters, Ruby Gray and Tonia (Kendall) Carter; three brothers, John (Bernice) Hill, Marvin (Bennie) Gray, and Roosevelt Rolax; four nephews, Trestin (Mernida), Jamon (Lequita), Jordan, and Brian; one niece, Melissa; great-nieces, Kyla and MaKenzi; bonus great-nieces, Kaimarie, JaKayla, and Rickeem; two step- children; along with a host of bonus grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends
